BSD-NL Conference - Spring 2026

On DOS, floppies, NetBSD and nostalgia
2026-05-09 , Pandora

Let's be real: Few things were better in the 80s or 90s. VHS was shit, the city air was disgusting, modems were a pain, and megacorporations were evil.

But computers? Oh, the computers! Imagine, a computer that could be understood, a computer whose inner workings weren't shrouded in NDA-embargoed mystery and a dozen abstraction layers!

Let's talk about that for a bit.

This is an invitation to spend an hour or so reminiscing about the "good old days", while exploring what a typical early-90s computer could actually do. I'll be bringing one or two specimens, and if the HDMI gods are willing, we can use the "big screen" to watch some demos, re-visit what I consider peak UI design, log on to a BBS, and perhaps play a game or two.

Model '77, Slackware-gone-BSD in the early 00s, escaped the dying world of OS/2 to be doomed to death by Netcraft for another decade. Now managing jailed (but not dead!) systems for a living and as a hobby.

Mid-life crisis topic: Retro PCs.
